How to spend a week in Mexico City

August 2024

When you hear someone talk about Mexico City, they’re usually raving about the food, night life, the nature, museums, and of course, the people. I too am one of those people who you’ll hear singing this city’s praises. We visit CDMX in August 2024 and it was a last minute trip. The flight from San Francisco to Mexico City is only about 4 hours, so it’s a perfect last minute international getaway. Here’s how I spend a week in this vibrant city!

Eating in CDMX

One of the best things about traveling is experiencing the local food. For us vegetarians, this can sometimes be a limited experience. I always try to just keep my expectations at the baseline, but I’m happy to say that even as a vegetarian, the food in Mexico City is phenonmal. I’ll even say that it’s my favorite “food city”.

Gatorta

My favorite meal of the whole trip - so good, I went here twice. Unpretentious, delicious, and vegan. Gatorta is for those want to experience local cuisine that just happens to be vegetarian. Located in the heart of the city, Gatorta is a counter service food stand that offers savory delights like tacos and tortas, and even vegan desserts for a sweet treat after your meal. I personally recommend the vegan chorizo tacos!

Panaderia Rosetta

Panaderia Rosetta is probably a name you’ve seen mentioned in every Mexico City travel guide, and I’m happy to say that it lives up to the hype. Rosetta is located in the very hip neighborhood of Roma Norte. There’s a super cute patio so you can enjoy your treats outdoors. Unsurprisingly, this place gets pretty packed but both times I went there, the service was extremely fast. I personally loved the guava roll, paired with one of the fresh juices. Honestly, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!

Mercado Roma

Perfect for when you don’t quite know what you want to eat. Mercado Roma is a food court style eatery with tons of options. You can get small plates from different places, grab a margartia, and top off the meal with ice cream. There was SO much energy in the market, so it’s perfect for getting your night started!

Tacos La Chila

Perfect for the meat lovers in your group! We stumbled across Tacos La Chula late at night and the place was packed with locals and visitors alike. Great for late night eats since it’s open 24 hours!

What to do in CDMX

Visit Teotihuacán

Located about an hour away from Mexico City, visiting Teotihuacán is a must if you have an interest in history or archeology. We booked our tour through Viator, which included private pickup from the hotel. Visting Teotihuacan is basically an all day activity, but we were back in the city by late afternoon.

Bosque de Chapultepec

Gorgeous, gorgeous park in the city! Chapultepec park is huge, and you can easily find activities to do here for multiple days! We visited the Museo Nacional de Antropología and spent time exploring the park on foot, but my favorite activity by far was biking in the park. We rented Ecobicis (local city bikes) and wandered through the park, stopping to people watch, have snacks, and to just enjoy how lush the park was. Highly reccomend!
